Overview:

The ABPS Documents are the definitive source of information for each examination.

It is imperative that prospective candidates familiarize themselves with the relevant documents before beginning the on-line application process. Our documents contain the specific requirements and step-by-step instructions to apply for an examination.

Also, our documents are updated annually, and are published in October on this web site. A candidate may only use the ABPS document specific to the year that they are taking the examination.

Attention Board Qualified

Beginning January 1, 2009, Board Qualified podiatric surgeons are required to log surgical procedures in Podiatry Logging Service for Surgery (PLS). Also, any procedures performed prior to January 1, 2009 that will be submitted for consideration in the Part II certification process must be entered in PLS. For more information please see ABPS documents 110 and 220.

Annual Updates

ABPS Documents 110, 111, 112, and 220 are updated annually. Be sure to review the documents for the year you are taking the examination. Documents are published in October.

ABPS 111 Document

“Information and Requirements for Diplomate Self-Assessment”


This document is only relevant for ABPS members certified before 1991 in Foot and Ankle Surgery.

Diplomates certified before 1991 have lifetime certificates but must meet a self-assessment requirement every ten years. Pre-1991 members seeking to covert to separate certifications for Foot Surgery and Reconstructive Rearfoot/Ankle Surgery may do so through the pathway described in ABPS 112.

Examination Locations

The ABPS Self-Assessment Examination is administered at Pearson computer test centers. There are over 200 Pearson sites in the United States.

ABPS 112 Document

Document title:

“Information and Requirements: Diplomate Recertification and Foot and Ankle Diplomate Status Conversion”


The ABPS 112 governs diplomates certified after 1990 that have certificates for Foot Surgery or Reconstructive Rearfoot/Ankle Surgery. Each certificate issued after 1990 is time-limited to ten years.

ABPS 112 also details the requirements and process for pre-1991 diplomates in Foot and Ankle Surgery who wish to voluntarily convert to the two current certifications. This process requires the successful candidate to surrender their lifetime certificate.

ABPS 220 Document

Document title:

“Instructions for Selecting Procedures and Submitting Case Documentation”


The ABPS 220 is specific to candidates applying for a Part II certification examination, selecting a list of procedures, and submitting case documentation. Selecting a list of procedures is made in Podiatry Logging Service for Surgery (PLS). There is a quick link to PLS in the panel on the right. After completing the list of procedures, the application process is completed online through the candidate’s personal page on the ABPS web site. ABPS 220 details the types of procedures to be submitted.

If the certification candidate’s list of procedures is approved, 10 procedures from the Foot Surgery list are selected (five from the Reconstructive Rearfoot/Ankle Surgery procedure list). The candidate is required to submit complete case documentation for the selected procedures as detailed in ABPS 220. ABPS 220 is the definitive source of information for preparing both the initial list of procedures and the complete case documentation for the selected procedures.

List of Procedures

The list of procedures is selected in Podiatry Logging Service for Surgery (PLS). Board Qualified podiatric surgeons are required to log all surgical procedures subsequent to January 1, 2009, as well as any procedures prior to January 1, 2009 the surgeon may wish to submit for credentialing. There is no charge for the use of PLS.

ABPS 420 (Study Guide)

Document Definition:

A Study Guide for Board Qualified, Certification, In-Training, Recertification, and SAE Examinations administered by ABPS.


The ABPS 420 describes the format of the examinations and subject areas covered. The "ABPS Online Study Guide" incorporates information from the ABPS 420 into a visually-rich e-learning format. Links to the Online Study Guide are available throughout the ABPS web site.

ABPS 500 (Study Guide)

Document Definition:

Examination Content for Board Qualified, Certification, In-Training, Recertification, and SAE Examinations administered by ABPS.


The ABPS 500 Examination Blueprint describes the content areas examined in each of the ABPS examinations. Included are the percentages of items contained in the written examinations and the content areas examined in the Part II (oral and CBPS) examinations.

ABPS Bylaws

Document Definition:

The ABPS Bylaws govern the operations of the organization.


Our Bylaws define membership, Board Qualified, voting, annual meeting, Board of Directors, standing committees, self-assessment, and recertification. They may only be amended by vote of the membership.

ABPS Advertising Policies

Document Definition:

Advertising Policies of the American Board of Podiatric Surgery.


The Board of Directors has established advertising policies to assist ABPS members in appropriately and professionally advertising their board certification status. The policies are intended to protect and enhance the profession of podiatric surgery.
